In March 2026, the United Kingdom’s Government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published the Land Use Framework for England, setting out how the UK Government can use the country’s land more effectively. Here’s our response, in the form of an open letter to the team behind the Land Use Framework.
——————–
To the team behind the Land Use Framework,
You have been clear about the challenge. England’s land must now deliver more across housing, infrastructure, food, nature, water and climate. Yet, decisions remain fragmented, data is disconnected and trade-offs are difficult to see, let alone manage.
As the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs Land Use Framework consultation recognises, a lack of strategic spatial planning and accessible data holds back development, slowing down the building of homes and vital infrastructure. The Framework also highlights the need for new tools and data to help make quicker, more predictable decisions on land.
The direction is clear. What remains undefined is the system required to deliver it consistently. That system already exists. May I introduce to you, DATA4NATURE!
DATA4NATURE delivers the tools and data the Framework calls for. It brings fragmented land use data together, makes it accessible and usable, and translates it into decision-ready insight. More importantly, it operationalises this at the point of decision-making—enabling faster, more informed and more predictable choices across housing, infrastructure, food, nature and climate.
Our detailed response below is intentionally structured to align with the Framework, translating its priorities into a clear, delivery-focused response. In short, where the Framework sets direction, DATA4NATURE enables delivery.
We would welcome the opportunity to show how this can work in practice.
Yours truly,
The DATA4NATURE Team
